Molly’s Page

Hi ! My name is Molly and my human Mom and I are a Pet Therapy team at ORMC and Nemours Children’s Hospital.

I was born on April 23, 2009 to Misty’s Dream and Cajun Rajun in Port Orange , FL. My official name is Molly Jo IX. My Mom never thought there would be another Molly Jo and imagine her surprise when the papers came back that I was the IX !!!!

It didn’t take long to figure out that door stops were fun to chew on and that the other little creature in the house ( Mom calls her CalieCat ) was fun to chase. Mom tried her hardest to housebreak me – that means pee/poop outside. When Mom used to open the door for me to go out in the yard, I used to grab my puppy pad and take it with me. Mom used to say some very unkind words and it took a

LONG time for her to admit I was housebroken. Even today, I refuse to go outside if it’s wet out. I don’t go inside, it’s just that I’m too much of a Diva to get my little paws wet  Ewww !!!!

My mom took me everyplace with her. She used to put me in her purse and even took me in Walmart. As I got bigger I didn’t fit anymore but still got to socialize a lot.

As I got a little older my Mom thought I should put my good looks and talent to work.  We joined the Obedience Club of Daytona in June 2010. On June 15, 2010, I passed Basic Obedience. My mom wanted me to make it clear that she did more work during this class than I did. On June 23, 2010 I made Canine Good Citizen status.  On Dec. 21, 2010 I passed Intermediate Obedience. There was no stopping me then. I got my official Therapy Dog registration through Therapy Dogs Inc. all before I was  a year and a half. On May 23, 2011 I achieved my AKC Therapy Dog Title of Therapy Dog. This past April I received my 100 Hour Pin

from here at ORMC.

In August of 2010, my Mom attended training from a wonderful lady named Merilee Kelley ( you may know her as Abbi’s Mom ) and we became a READing ( Reading Education Assistance Dog ) Paws team. For the last two school years I’ve gone to Freedom Elementary in Deland, Fl and I read with children who need to better develop their reading skills. I get lots of treats from those kids ! Last year the class awarded me the “Best Listener “ award for the 2011-2012 school year.

In Nov. of 2010 , I started volunteering here at ORMC. I just love this place. I can visit with all kinds of wonderful patients and staff . I put a smile on all their faces. Of course my costumes on holidays and my fancy footwork ( Mom calls them tricks ) makes the sickest of patients just a little better. I tell them that ORMC is THE  place to be and that they will be good enough soon to go home and hug their own dog.

Last fall my Mom entered my picture in a contest. I was one of the ten finalists in the Pawject Runway event in St. Pete Beach, FL. I got to go and stay at this swanky place on the beach .  I didn’t win but another little dog who was recovering from chemo and cancer did. I was OK with that as she deserved some special recognition for all she’d been through !

I am active with a group in the Daytona area called Sophie’s Circle. It is the first pet food bank in Volusia County. I have appeared on the Daytona Cubs website with the team mascot holding me.

Amy at Bark Ave. in Deland, Fl is my groomer and she makes me look maaarvelous – don’t you think ?

In my work with READing Paws I try to be an good example for children. I participate in READing at libraries, and extended learning centers besides my work during the normal school year with Mrs. Karen Anderson’s class at Freedom Elementary in Deland, FL.

I try and help further public education about READing Paws and literacy by participating in The READing Paws booths at home shows and community events. Barnes & Noble at Christmas time let the dogs do gift wrapping for items bought in the store. Some of the READing dogs even know how to take a dollar bill from the customer’s hand and place it in our donation jar.

I also volunteer for  the Shih Tzu and Furbaby rescue. It is a rescue organization that fosters and finds homes for small breed dogs. I think every little doggy should be as pampered and spoiled as I am ! Another organization I participate in is Sophie’s Circle which is the local petfood bank in Volusia County.
